FAQ
Q: Is there a fiber cut? I have no service; what should I do?
A: Unfortunately, this can and does happen! If there is a fiber cut, and your carrier is put out of service, try to place calls through another network. Try the code below, then enter “1” plus the number (i.e., 1010288, 1, area code, then the number).
For ATT: 1010288.
For MCI: 1010222.
For Sprint: 1010333.
Q: How can I find out who my long distance carrier is?
A: Try calling your carrier by using the Carrier Test Numbers below for Ameritech, Qwest, or Verizon Exchanges: Dial 1(then your area code) 700-4141 to discover the carrier in your LATA . Dial 1-700-555-4141 to determine the carrier in the remainder of the U.S. The latter test number will work out of LATA for all exchange areas.
Q: My carrier automatically renews my contract terms. How can I change this?
A: The next time you pay your phone bill, send a letter stating that you do not wish your term to automatically renew unless the carrier calls you 30 days prior to the renewal to discuss rates. Place a copy of the letter in your files.
Q: Will my phone rates ever decrease?
A: Rates do decrease! Federal regulations may change the overall cost of your phone bill. Check with your agent, or carrier, at least every six months to inquire if changes have occurred that would benefit you.
Q: What is “slamming”?
A: “ Slamming” is switching your carrier without your authorization. (How does this happen??) If you are "slammed" do the following: First, call your local telephone company and tell them you did not order service from the new long-distance provider. Ask to be reconnected to your original long-distance provider and ask that any "charge changes" be taken off your bill. Next, call the company that slammed you. Advise them that you will only pay the charges your preferred carrier would have charged. If the carrier will not drop any additional charges, contact the FCC at the following address:
FCC, Common Carrier Bureau Enforcement Division, Informal Complaints Branch 2025 M. Street, NW Washington , D.C. 20554
Provide complete details of the incident and any information that may help the FCC handle your complaint. You can also try to phone them at: 888-225-5322.
Q: What is “cramming”?
A: “ Cramming” is the inclusion of service charges you did not order that are billed on your local exchange telephone bill. Consumers should check bills thoroughly each month for services that were not requested. If you find that you have been crammed, you call one of the numbers listed below, or the Utility Commission in your state.
